Alumrekah by Clareta Milena

Alumarekah (2022) by Clareta Milena (b. 2000) is a collection of circular jewelry that tells a story about the lifecycle—how everything that blooms will eventually wither. The collection is part of an undergraduate thesis project for the Textile Craft program at the Bandung Institute of Technology.

The project explores the potential of natural dyes for homemade bioplastics and their applications in the fashion industry. The bioplastic is made from a mixture of tapioca, agar, and gelatin, resulting in a material that exhibits the unique characteristics of each component. The pieces are colored using Indonesia’s natural resources: Tingi wood for red, Tegeran wood for yellow, Indigofera for blue, and Jelawe for brown. Combinations of these natural dyes allow for a wide range of colors throughout the collection.

The collection consists of two sub-collections, with each collection represents Alum (bloom) and Rekah (wither).

Medividi contributed to building the structure to which the bioplastic is attached for the 'rekah' or 'bloom' portion of the collection, made with gold-plated brass.
